Barely two weeks after the Russian operator MTS slashed STD charges to around 27 paise per minute (half paise per second,) Uninor has followed suit, though only in the Mumbai circle for now.
However, unlike MTS customers, Uninor customers will have to pay an extra Rs 36 per month for availing of 30 paise per minute STD tariffs. MTS tariff is valid without such periodic recharges, but is available only on CDMA phones.
The Uninor offer is the lowest domestic long distance tariff offer in the country. The lowest offer, before Uninor came along, was that of Tata DoCoMo and Videocon who offered STD at 40 paise per minute for a fixed monthly rental. Videocon also offers a 25 paise per minute scheme for the first 15 minutes of STD per day.
Uninor, a subsidiary of the Norway-based Telenor, is the fastest growing new telecom operator in the country. It has 33 branded stores and 17,686 outlets in Mumbai, the firm said.
