Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has offered the family of the murdered 14-year-old girl in Lakhimpur to have a CBI investigation into the whole matter.
“I would like to assure the family that if they want an investigation by the CBI or any other agency, my government will not be opposed to it,” she said.
However, she added that the Central agency does not have a sparkling reputation in solving murders in her state. “My only fear [in handing the case to the CBI] is that this case too may become untraceable like the Aarush murder of Noida,” she said.
Mayawati’s response has come as political parties such as the Samajwadi Party and the Congress have tried to take advantage of incident to high light the “loose law and order” situation in the state. Even the National Commission for Women had termed the condition in the state to be near anarchy.
In reply, Mayawati has already written to the Prime Minister pointing out that the Central rights commissions are acting like the arms of the Congress, which is preparing the ground for state elections early next year.
