Congress wants CBI investigation into Lakhimpur episode

The Congress Party has asked for a CBI enquiry into the death of a 14-year-old girl in Lakhimpur in UP.

The girl, whose body was found hanging from a tree in a Police Station compound, has been confirmed as murdered by the second post-mortem analysis conducted earlier in the day. Mayawati Government has also ordered an inquiry by the CB-CID (the top state investigative agency).

“We don’t have any confidence in the state police.. The CB-CID probe is only meant to suppress the facts in the case,” Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said, asking for a CBI probe to be ordered.

Under the law, the CBI can investigate only if the state government requests it to do so, as law and order is a state subject.
