DMK calls emergency meeting to discuss Maran, Kanimozhi

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam, one of the core supporters of the UPA government at the Centre, has called for an emergency meeting tomorrow to discuss latest political events.

The call has come after DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi, was denied bail by the Delhi High Court. Kanimozhi, close to Karunanidhi’s heart, will spend most of the unbearable Delhi summer in a Tihar jail cell.

The emergency meeting will also discuss the increasing pressure being exerted on Dayanidhi Maran, the current textiles minister and a former telecom minister of the country. Maran, related to Karunanidhi and a senior leader in the DMK, has been accused of arm-twisting serial entrepreneur and Nadar leader C Shivasankaran to sell the latter’s company Aircel to Maxis of Malaysia. In turn, Maran is alleged to have financial links with Maxis.

Sources say at least some members of the DMK are likely to press the leader to withdraw support to the Central government led by the UPA. UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has already sent what are seen by some as feelers to Karunanidhi’s arch-rival Jayalalitha, inviting her for breakfast etc..

DMK is caught between a rock and a hard place as, if it withdraws support for the UPA, BJP may come to power and harass it even more in the name of uncovering corruption. If it doesn’t, it will continue to suffer at the hands of a very indifferent and apathetic ally at the centre.

The CBI has been after DMK leaders for many months, leaking information about DMK leaders’ culpability in the 2G scam to the media. The Congress has maintained that it cannot interfere in the investigation as it is being monitored directly by the Supreme Court.
