Idea Cellular expands 3G in Kerala to all districts

IDEA Cellular said it has extended its 3G services to all the districts in Kerala.

Idea has now launched 3G services in the Idukki district, in towns such as Adimali, Munnar, Kattapana, Thekkady, Mayiladumpara, Anakara, Cheruthony, Kumily, Thadiyampadu and Nedumkandam, the company said.

Idukki is one of the most difficult and backward districts in the state. Idea’s 3G coverage has already crossed 50% of the Kerala population in just one year, the company said.

It said 13 lakh out of its 73 lakh subscribers are on its 3G network, making it, according to Idea, the number one 3G provider in Kerala. It has 1700 3G towers in the states, the company said.

3G was first launched in Kerala by BSNL, almost two years ago, but the state-owned company has found it difficult to match the growth rate seen by Idea, which covers 97 per cent of the Kerala population.

Idea is the cheapest 3G operator in India, offering rates that are sometimes even cheaper than those offered by BSNL. Idea offers 4 GB of 3G data for Rs 750 and 6 GB for Rs 850 per month.

In tie-up with manufacturers such as Huawei, Idea also offers 3G smartphones, starting from about Rs 5,850, in Kerala.
