Bail denied to prevent Kanimozhi influencing witnesses

Special CBI judge OP Saini said bail is being denied to Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK leader Karunanidhi, so as to prevent any chance of witnesses in the case being influenced.

“Considering the magnitude of the crime, the nature of the allegations, …there is no doubt that the accused have not made a case for bail..,” Saini said, adding that witnesses may be influenced if the accused are let off.

“I am unable to show consideration to her on the grounds that she is a woman,” he added.

DMK leader K Karunanidhi’s daughter and the MD of Kalaignar channel K Kanimozhi has been denied bail in the 2G spectrum scam case.

The MP is now likely to be sent to the Tihar Jail, where the other accused are also lodged under trial. Sharad Kumar, MD of Kalaignar TV too has been denied bail and therefore sent to judicial custody in Tihar jail.

“Bail can be denied if it is argued that her being outside [the jail] will be detrimental to investigations..,” pointed out senior lawyer Aryama Sundaram from Delhi.

Mahesh Jethmalani, son of Ram Jethmalani, said the order was expected since none of the other accused have been granted bail. “It would have been discriminatory to not to deny her bail, after it was denied to all the others in the case,” he said.
